There is something about the first day of September that always feels like a transition.

Even when the weather is still warm and summer hasn't quite let go, something begins to shift. The long, bright days are slowly moving toward shorter ones, routines begin to change, and there is often a feeling that we are entering a new chapter.

September 1 marks the beginning of meteorological autumn, although the astronomical first day of autumn arrives later in the month. I like that distinction because, in many ways, it reflects how change often happens in our own lives.

The shift begins before we can fully see it.

We may not wake up one morning and suddenly feel different. Change is often quieter than that. It starts with a thought, a feeling, a growing awareness that something is no longer working in the same way, or a small desire to do things differently.

And then, little by little, we begin to move.

The invitation to pause and notice

Summer often carries an energy of movement. We spend more time outside, our schedules can become fuller, and there is a natural sense of expansion around us.

As autumn approaches, nature begins to remind us of a different rhythm.

There is a gradual slowing down.

And perhaps this is something we can learn to bring into our own lives.

Not necessarily doing less simply for the sake of doing less, but becoming more conscious about where we are placing our energy.

What has been working for us?

What has been draining us?

What do we want to carry forward?

And what might be ready to change?

Yoga gives us a beautiful way to practice this awareness. Every time we step onto the mat, we have an opportunity to pause and notice what is actually happening within us.

How does the body feel today?

Where are we holding tension?

What is the quality of our breath?

What thoughts are following us onto the mat?

We don't have to immediately change anything. The first step is simply to observe.

Because we cannot consciously choose a different direction until we become aware of where we are.

Expand in the right direction

The word expand can sometimes make us think that we need to do more, become more or achieve more.

But perhaps expansion isn't always about adding.

Perhaps sometimes expansion means creating more space.

More space to breathe.

More space to move.

More space to listen to ourselves.

More space between what happens and how we react.

More space to ask ourselves what we truly want, rather than automatically continuing with what we have always done.

As we move into September, I want to think about expansion in this way.

Not: How can I fill my life with more?

But: How can I create more space for what matters?

That might mean taking five quiet minutes before reaching for your phone in the morning. It might mean going for a walk without listening to anything. It might mean returning to your yoga mat, cooking a nourishing meal or simply allowing yourself to rest without feeling guilty about it.

Small moments of awareness can change the quality of an entire day.

Moving with the season

One of the things I am learning is that we don't always have to fight the changing seasons of life.

There are times for action and times for reflection. Times when we feel full of energy and times when the body asks us to slow down. Times when we need to move forward and times when we need to pause long enough to understand where we are going.

Yoga teaches us this too.

There are moments in a practice when we feel strong and expansive. We open, reach, balance and move. And then there are moments when we soften into a pose, become still and simply breathe.

Both are part of the practice.

Perhaps September can be an invitation to find that same balance in our lives.

To continue moving forward, but with greater awareness.

To remain open to possibility, while also becoming more grounded.

To expand, not by filling every available space, but by becoming more present in the life we already have.

As this new month begins, I'm asking myself a simple question:

What do I want to make space for?

Maybe that's a question worth carrying with you too.

You don't need to have the entire month figured out. You don't need a perfect plan or a long list of resolutions.

Just begin by noticing.

Notice what is changing around you.

Notice what is changing within you.

And then take one breath, one step and one intentional choice at a time.

September is here.

A new month. A changing season. A gentle reminder that we are allowed to change too.

Take a breath.
Create some space.
And allow yourself to expand.

It’s not too late. It’s your time.

Empower your journey through yoga and mindfulness.
